Members of Parliament

A Member of Parliament (MP) is person elected to the House of Representatives. A member of Parliament may be elected to represent an electoral district or may be from a political party’s list.

You will have two MPs in your local electorate: one elected and one from the party list. They might not be from the same party, nor be a part of the sitting Government.  However their primary role is to help residents, and each MP will be open to being approached by you.

How can they help?  In four main ways:

1)  Listening and providing advice.  MPs are skilled communicators.  Sometimes all you might need is a sympathetic ear to hear you out.  Talking about your problems to someone else can help you come up with solutions.

2)  Making a representation on your behalf to the Council.  An MP may choose to write or telephone a local Councillor or even the Mayor, to help explain your problem and seek a speedy solution.

3)  Making a question in the House for oral answer.  In Parliament there is a question time, this is part of general business dealt with by the House each sitting day when members ask oral questions of Ministers, chairpersons of select committees, and other members about matters for which they are responsible. Note MPs who are part of the Government may not make oral questions in the House.

4)  Making a question in the House questions for written answer.  These are questions lodged by any MP for Ministers to answer in writing, which must relate to matters for which the Ministers are responsible. Replies must be provided within 6 working days. Questions and replies are published on the Parliament website.

See the list of MPs below.  They will also be listed in your Yellow Pages, or you can visit the official Parliament website for a list of telephone numbers here.
